Brief Description of the Project:

The project has an impact on the decarbonisation and circularity of the economy, producing a chemical product in high demand through a more sustainable route from the point of view of energy, environment and atomic efficiency than those currently existing. The thesis project consists of the development of catalytic technology for the production of furfuryl alcohol, from biomass, with high added value. The process consists of the selective hydrogenation of furfural in the aqueous phase, with hydrogen produced in-situ from methanol or formic acid. Spinel-derived catalysts of the type MeAl2O4 (Me=Ni, Co, Cu) capable of producing hydrogen and, in-situ, using it to selectively hydrogenate the C=O bond of the furfural will be designed. Optimal conditions will be sought to maximise performance at furfuryl alcohol and to prolong the life of the catalyst

The project is part of the research line of Biorefinery Catalysts & Processes, from the group Chemical Technology for Environmental Sustainability (TQSA, https://www.tqsa.es/), is looking for a pre-doctoral researcher to carry out the Doctoral Thesis.

  • DESTINATION CENTRE: Faculty of Science and Technology, University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU).
